Pregnancy and contraception
The Roaccutane leaflet describes an “extremely high risk” of a severely deformed baby if pregnancy occurs during treatment. Effective contraception is required for one month before, throughout, and for one month after treatment. Roaccutane is not used during breastfeeding.

Mood, sexual function and blood tests

The leaflet also lists sexual dysfunction, including impaired sexual function in males, lower libido and breast enlargement in men (gynaecomastia). Your doctor may order regular blood tests for liver function, blood sugar and cholesterol.
Skin care during treatment
Avoid too much sun and solariums, and use sunscreen. Waxing and dermabrasion should be avoided during treatment and for 5 to 6 months afterwards. Do not give blood while taking Roaccutane or for at least a month after stopping.
Taking Roaccutane
Capsules are taken with food and swallowed whole with water or milk, at the dose your doctor prescribes.

Tetracycline antibiotics, vitamin A supplements, other acne treatments and progestogen-only (“mini”) contraceptive pills are named in the leaflet.
Side effects
Listed as common: dry lips, mouth and skin, fragile skin, peeling palms and soles, dry eyes, nosebleeds, joint and muscle aches, tiredness, headache and temporary hair loss.
Get urgent medical help for vomiting, a headache that will not go away, blurred vision, severe stomach pain, muscle weakness, blood in the stools, severe rashes or blistering, hallucinations, or depression with suicidal thoughts.
